Marmite – 4.4 oz jar of yeast extract
This yeast extract is spread on toast, put in gravies and mixed into broths throughout Great Britain, and everywhere that British people can find it. But even the makers of this iconic spread don’t expect many non-Brits to have a taste for it. Though in parts of the former British empire, Marmite has its local fans, too. The spread is evidently very popular in Sri Lanka. Marmite is intense and savory. There is no substitute for its distinctive tang, though some have compared it to Japanese miso. If you’ve never had it and are looking for a gustatory thrill, give it a try! Marmite has also become popular among those interested in a plant-based diet, as a means of introducing some key B vitamins into one’s eating.
